After 15 years of call-outs across London, we've learned something surprising: most "emergencies" could wait — or never happen — with a £60 toolkit and ten minutes of know-how. Here's exactly what our vans carry, distilled for your hallway cupboard.
The core six: fix 80% of niggles
1. A decent multi-bit screwdriver set. Flat, Phillips and Torx cover curtain rails, sockets and flat-pack fixes. Skip the 100-piece sets; a 30-piece ratchet set is plenty.
2. Claw hammer (16oz). Hanging pictures, tapping floorboards, pulling the odd nail. Fibreglass handles absorb vibration far better than steel.
3. Tape measure (5m). The tool that prevents the most expensive mistakes — measure the sofa, the doorway and the stairwell before ordering anything.
4. Spirit level (60cm). Shelves, frames and curtain poles all depend on it. Your phone's level app lies; a real level doesn't.
5. Adjustable wrench. One good 250mm wrench handles radiator bleed valves, tap connectors and bike-level plumbing tweaks.
6. Cordless drill-driver (12V). The single biggest upgrade. Pilot holes, wall plugs, flat-pack assembly — a 12V drill does it all without the wrist ache.
The next six: for confident DIY
7. Utility knife and spare blades. Opening boxes cleanly, trimming wallpaper, cutting sealant tubes. Change blades often; blunt is dangerous.
8. Combination pliers. Gripping, bending and pulling where fingers won't fit — especially under sinks.
9. Stud and pipe detector. In London's Victorian conversions, pipes and cables hide everywhere. A £25 detector beats a flooded wall.
10. Assorted wall fixings. Plasterboard anchors, masonry plugs and screws in common sizes. The fixings that come in the box are almost always wrong.
11. PTFE tape and sealant. A dripping compression joint or a cracked bath seal waits for no one. Both cost under a fiver.
12. Head torch. Lofts, understairs cupboards and boiler corners are always dark. Hands-free light changes everything.
What to skip (for now)
Angle grinders, SDS drills and drain rods earn their place on building sites, not in flats. Hiring them per-job is cheaper — and if a job needs serious power tools, that's usually the moment to call us instead.
